Judge awards women $13 million in massive lawsuit against GirlsDoPorn

A former beauty pageant queen has made new allegations in a federal lawsuit claiming she was sex trafficked and raped on the orders of an infamous pornography producer. The plaintiff alleged on the day of filming, the adult star she would partner with arrived and immediately threw up, and then began smoking cannabis which he offered to her. One of the Jane Doe plaintiffs alleged in the complaint that she used Pornhub’s non-consensual content takedown portal to try to get videos where she appeared removed from the platform, and didn’t get a response. “It is outrageous. Reprehensible. Every polite phrase that you can use to describe conduct,” said attorney Ed Chapin, managing partner of Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP, which worked on the case. Chapin told NPR that in addition to offering financial compensation, the websites also have to take down the Internet postings and let the women know that “friends and loved ones may see it — so if you want to be paid money, then you’ve got to understand what the potential problems are.” Until recently, anyone could upload videos to Pornhub, with the site becoming something of a haven for pirates movies and other non-pornographic content.

Pratt, Garcia, and Wolfe, operating in San Diego, ran adult websites through a series of overseas shell companies and defrauded hundreds of women over the course of more than a decade. At trial, the plaintiffs proved all thirteen defendants were alter egos of each other and joint venturers in the fraudulent scheme. Hundreds of people tricked into making explicit videos for porn websites have been awarded the rights to the videos and millions of dollars in damages. Before the video shoots, Garcia offered victims marijuana or alcohol and some drank or smoked with Garcia before filming.

A state judge tentatively awarded more than $12.7 million to the 22 women suing porn production company Girls Do Porn today, finding that the company intimidated the women into shooting adult videos, and lied to them about how they will be distributed. Several others have pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking, including website operator Matthew Isaac Wolfe, who awaits sentencing next month, and producer and porn actor Ruben Andre Garcia, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The group told the models they’d receive $3,000 to $5,000 for a one-day video shoot, court documents show. When the women declined to participate in the shoots because they feared the footage would be uploaded online, the group lied and told them the videos would “only be distributed outside the U.S. on DVD or to supposed private collectors overseas,” the documents said. Throughout the alleged conspiracy, Pratt and the co-defendants recruited hundreds of young women from around the U.S. and Canada who were aspiring models, court records show.

The 37-year-old San Diego resident pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of conspiracy to commit stalking on the same day prosecutors filed the charge. As part of his plea, in which he admitted to filming about 100 videos for the GirlsDoPorn site and related sites, he also admitted that he was hired to make the harassment video by GirlsDoPorn’s founder, Michael James Pratt, and the site’s operator, Matthew Isaac Wolfe. Attorney’s Office and the civil lawsuit both alleged that young women who applied online for modeling jobs as far back as 2015 were initially deceived about the true nature of the work — to appear in porn videos. Most were told the video production would take around 30 minutes, when in reality, they typically lasted for several hours.

Though the indictment offers few details about his alleged conduct, related civil cases have revealed that Wiederhold created a GirlsDoPorn-style “mom” porn site for women over 30 years old. Prosecutors have alleged that Pratt and those who worked for him recruited young women online as models, but when the women arrived in San Diego, they were pressured to have sex on camera. The women were told the videos would go to private DVD collections overseas, but instead they were widely disseminated on the GirlsDoPorn network of sites, as well as free pornography sites. SAN DIEGO – Matthew Isaac Wolfe was sentenced in federal court today to 14 years in prison for his role in a conspiracy with Michael Pratt, owner of the website GirlsDoPorn, and others, to deceive and coerce young women into appearing in pornographic videos.
